summary;
Malcius Derdenvaad, “Mal” to his friends. A magic school drop-out from the prestigious Soltryce Academy, who once made an ill-advised pact with a demon in order to fake his way through his classes. Was eventually found out and expelled, and is now roaming around picking up mercenary jobs for a living. Can be unexpectedly charming, but in a buffoonish sort of way; is a self-serving disaster himbo just making things up on the fly. Squabbles with his mysterious patron Abaddon (aka “Abe”), who speaks through his weapon and is also the source of most of his magical powers; they seem to have settled into the comfortable back-and-forth bickering of a buddy comedy. Mal can technically summon the shape of any weapon, but he sticks to a giant ole two-handed greataxe. He can sometimes be heard arguing with the axe, and it changes size whenever his patron is displeased with him or just feels like yanking Mal’s chain.

Mercenary work is the usual hook for meeting new characters. He doesn’t talk much about his history; you’ll have to reach a higher friendship level to unlock that backstory.
physical description
VISUAL 6’0”, tall and lean. Red skin, dark eyes, swept-back slightly-curling horns and a tail, clearly marking his part-demon heritage. He’s fit and has good stamina, but is built more like a magic-user than a frontline fighter; he doesn’t actually look like he’s strong enough to wield that suspiciously, ostentatiously large two-handed great-axe. Wears medium armour. Some references.

AURAL A little low and raspy, as if he’s breathed too much around a fire recently (or all the time). Has a touch of a Dwendalian accent; think a German/Russian-influenced empire. Speaks Common and Infernal.

OLFACTORY Leather, crisp metal, faint woodsmoke.

DEMEANOUR Loose and casual and charming. Often found lounging, or trying to make himself look as cool and capable as possible (this is often not the case). Runs hot due to his infernal constitution; is a very good living radiator.
background
MERCENARY VETERAN You know the mercenary life as only someone who has experienced it can. You are able to identify mercenary companies by their emblems, and you know a little about any such company, including the names and reputations of its commanders and leaders, and who has hired them recently. You can find the taverns and festhalls where mercenaries abide in any area, as long as you speak the language. You can find mercenary work between adventures sufficient to maintain a comfortable lifestyle.
characteristics
PERSONALITY TRAITS I can stare down a hell hound without flinching.

IDEALS Independence. When people follow orders blindly, they embrace a kind of tyranny. (Chaotic)
Live and Let Live. Ideals aren’t worth killing over or going to war for. (Neutral)

BONDS I’ll never forget the crushing defeat my company suffered or the enemies who dealt it.

FLAWS I made a terrible mistake in battle that cost many lives, and I would do anything to keep that mistake secret.
